So I finally got around to watching my copy of Evangelion Rebuild 1.01, which I've had on DVD for probably a year or just under. I don't remember watching most of the original series, at least not the beginning of it and I did watch both the movies Rebirth and End of Evangelion. I also liked it mostly because I liked some the ideas it put forward and how psychologically fucked up it was especially at the end in the last two episodes of the anime.
Originally I didn't really like Shinji very much, I just thought he was a whiny baby and found him exceedingly annoying. Then while watched Rebuild 1.01 I realised that actually what's expected of him is really unfair. He gets pushed aside by his father only to be called back years later and only because his father has a 'use' for him. I think from the off the other characters are pushing unfair expectations on him while giving him no time to properly digest it.
I understand that they are pressed for time, they can't wait around forever and they have to protect the world and everything. But at the same time it's a large burden to suddenly shove onto a young teenager. Misato tell Shinji that he has a choice, when really I felt that watching it no one was really giving him that choice, his father purposely put him in a situation where he would have to make the 'choice' that his father wanted him to make.
When talking to Shinji other characters don't really seem to take his instability into account, even though they talk about it to others (Ritsuko and Misato). So although I still find Shinji to be a bit irritating I like him a lot more than I did originally, I just feel like everything being pushed on him is unfair. He hasn't been trained for what they want him to do; he doesn't know how to cope with his situation and is emotionally unstable because of his feelings of abandonment. Misato seems to be the only adult willing to give him encouragement and praise even though she knows she isn't the one he wants to hear it from.
Ok that's enough about Shinji or I'm gonna start going in circles with this pity party. A character who my feelings haven't changed towards is Shinji's father Gendou Ikari. I've always be abhorrent towards Gendou I find him to be a rather horrible character though I suppose on some level he's designed so that people don't really like him. I don't like how he treats Shinji especially since he seems to view him as useless and expendable only calling on him when he needs him and having no good words for him. He is a rather cold and calculating character I feel. I would have a better formed opinion of him if I could remember more about him. However he does seem to be a character driven purely for his own ambition and I guess I don't like that about him either because I'm not sure his ambitions can be considered honourable, certainly in the original series and movies I think they weren't.
Another character I haven't changed much in opinion towards is Misato. I actually rather like her, she has to say some hard things and make tough decisions. She worries for Shinji's well being while at the same time being vexed and confused by the way he reacts and behaves, but realises why he is the way he is and has ideas about what he needs. I feel like while she is also making unfair demands on him she is trying to be fair to him and finding it hard because of her duty and their mission. She has to try and get Shinji to stay on task and remain motivated, while also helping him to change and grow as a character.
As for Rei I've never liked her very much but I don't dislike her really. I think I'm just neutral towards her because she at least starts out like a blank slate, at least to me she does.
Enough about the characters. I'm glad I bought this DVD and bothered to finally watch it because I got to see some good animation and some cool things I didn't really see before. Mostly I liked how they showed Shinji's first Eva entry in the plug I thought that was some pretty awesome visuals. I also really liked the fifth Angel. I was just in awe of how it moved and shifted shape, it was pretty cool too watch, I just can't explain how much I liked that Angel guess I'm not very creative with words sometimes.
Anyway it was well worth the watch and I want to pick up Rebuild 2.02 soon, perhaps at expo next month I imagine I should be able to get it there. Oh and one more thing I was quite happy to see Kaworu at the end, I really liked him in the original series and in the movie so I'm hoping to get to see more of him this time round. Last time he had some pretty interesting ideas and ways of thinking.
Welp that is literally it for this movie I guess. I really enjoyed it and should have got off my arse and watched it sooner. Anyone who liked the original series should give it a watch, and anyone who likes Mech animes but also likes complicated and sometimes somewhat fucked up story lines should give it a look too.
